Hello,
The company I work for uses HID cards for door entry, and am wondering if I am able to use the same card for my own purposes. I understand that HID RFID cards are special and contain an extra layer of 'security', but if I simply want to use the same card on a non-hid reader will it work? Basically I am after a USB reader, that when I scan my work 'HID ProxCard II' ID card the reader will send to the computer a unique code of the card. If the card is scanned again, the same code will be sent to the computer. If another card was scanned, a different code would be sent to the computer... I am thinking of purchasing something like this "125Khz EM4100 RFID Proximity ID Cards USB Reader" from eBay to try out as is only AU$40. Would this be able read a HID cards, given it operates at 125Khz ? Or do hid card's only respond to HID readers? Hope that made sense, let me know otherwise. Thanks Peter

The HID line of proxcards do not have an extra layer of security, they are simple read-only 125KHz tags. The "security" they speak of is a simple trick of the software that does not allow an HID card from one "site" to be used at another "site", which is not security at all... it is a calculated sales trick to ensure you cannot simply give one person a single HID card and that person be able to use it at multiple facilities. For example, I have an HID card for accessing my off-site mailbox, but I also have an HID card for accessing another facility. I wanted to simply buy an HID card and register it with both facilities so I could just have one card, but the site ID for each facility was different, so I couldn't. This is not security and has nothing to do with making the system more secure, this is simply forcing customers to buy and carry around multiple HID cards for multiple facilities. Ridiculous.
Ok, with that rant out of the way, you will not be able to read an HID card using an EM4100 family reader. The data protocols used by each type of card are different. You can find 3rd party HID readers out there, but I refuse to support HID in any fashion, even if that fashion is buying a reader that has been licensed to decode the HID bitstream (reader makers pay HID for that privilege). |
