After reading the forum for a bit, I decided on implanting a 13mm x 3mm rfid tag simply due to the increased range.
That said, I really don't know anyone that I would trust with a scalpel, so I'd prefer to try to inject the tag. Are there any injection kits that can handle a 3mm tag? Or, what would be an alternative method to slicing myself open and sliding it in? -CT |

There are no injection methods I know of for a 3x13mm tag, however several body piercing professionals have used what's called a punch to basically punch a hole in your skin and burrow under it a bit, then push the tag into the void created by the punch. If I were you, I would get someone else to perform the procedure as they will most likely have a steadier hand :) A few questions if I may?
- How old are you? - What country do you live in? - Where on your body would you like to implant the tag? - What projects are you planning to use it for? - Have you done any testing with the glass tag and reader/project yet? |

I went the route of having a piercer implant mine. He took a 6 gauge needle and used that to make a pocket and then he slid the chip in the hole. He bandaged it up and I was on my way. I would recommend finding someone else to do it for you since it dones hurt a good bit and you risk not making the pocket deep enough which could lead to your body simply pushing the tag out. I've had mind for just shy of two months now and it has settled in nicely. You can't see any bump and just the slightest discoloration from the mouth of the pocket. I am very happy with how well it all went!

I'm 23 and I live in the US. I was planning on putting mine in my hand, probably where most get it in that fleshy part between the index finger and thumb.
As far as projects, I currently have an RFID for the door on my home and thought it'd be cool to not have to pull out my keys or keycard. I have a MCU using a Parallax reader and have just recently purchased a couple of these: http://www.trossenrobotics.com/store/p/3617-Small-Glass-Ampoule-Tag.aspx Currently I have the reader installed outside of my house, but I'm going to experiment with moving it inside the wall beside the door frame or in the door or something, hence the necessary range. I also want to eventually install one on my car. I have a carPC, so it would make a few things pretty easy and fun to experiment with. I've not received the glass tags yet, but my reader is apparently compatible with the EM4102. I'll definitely be testing before I go shoving it into my hand though :-P |

Thanks :) I think you'll find the parallax reader to be quite difficult to use. I often have to mash my hand (3x13mm) into the reader to get a read. The RedBee reader is much much better at reading 3x13mm tags as well as 2x12mm tags, but more spendy.

I did mine the other day with a 6ga piercing needle. It hurt, but not too badly. I iced it for a good ten minutes beforehand, though.
Just make sure, if you follow this route, you get the needle in deep enough and at the correct angle that you want. I also used a home-made rig to pinch my skin from a hanging clothespin (brand new and washed THOROUGHLY, for the record). The weight of my hand pulled the skin up and in went the needle.
