Hey there, can you specify the reader you bought? Maybe post some pictures and/or URL? Also, if you bought the reader I think you bought, you might want to check out this thread; http://rfidtoys.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=692

this is the link to a picture of the reader..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230374841233&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=%3F*F%3F&GUID=4cfe1d531280a02681075be7ffea273c&itemid=230374841233&ff4=263602_263622 i have tried everything but it just doesn't close the relay so that it let the current pass through... What i am trying to do is to make a passive kill switch ![]() ![]() But instead of the remote power line im trying to use the readers out put signal... but i still tried just using a relay to see if it would close it but it didn't work so if there's any mods that i can do to the reader appreciated

Well, if you can't get the RFID reader to even close a relay all by itself, then have you tried just putting a volt meter on the RFID reader output to ensure power is being supplied when a valid tag is run over the reader? You have programmed the reader with valid tags, right?

well i have tried hooking it up to a DMM and it reads about 11.86 v and if i hook up the relay and check the voltage it goes all the way down to 4v or even lower some times...
yes sir i have programed the tags |

hmm, in the ebay post it shows two readers... did you order/get two readers and have you tried testing both? it sounds like the reader is trying but the load is too great. these readers are pretty much random when it comes to quality and even internal wiring. you might try using a relay with a much smaller coil and current draw and seeing if it is able to close. failing that, i'd contact the seller.

these readers have a long history. they were manufactured for several purposes, all of which are now defunct. there is a huge stockpile of them floating around, and a few sellers on ebay have modified them to support relay functionality. if you have an original reader, then chances are it can't support a relay directly, and you'll be limited to around 20ma maximum current draw. the only relays i know of that draw that little are 12v reed relays from Radio Shack. you will also need to consider adding a protection diode so a voltage spike doesn't feed back into the reader when the relay is deactivated.
