I am moving forward with a different chip - the EM4450.  For my needs, the only difference is 1kb of storage instead of 2kb.  This chip has password protection and works with a large number of readers.

Thanks for the update! What reader are you going to use to communicate with the EM4450?

PS, if anyone is interested here is the entire EM4xxx family datasheet repository; http://www.emmicroelectronic.com/webfiles/Product/RFID/DS

I was also informed that the Hitag S has another "security" option.  Essentially, you can put it in a mode where it tells the world it is a different tag when queried as to its tag type.  It still responds to all the other commands, so it is simply camouflage, and a user has to know that it really is a Hitag S.  This isn't secure enough for my needs, but interesting nonetheless.

From what I gather about the HITAGs ability to function as other tags, it cannot do it simultaniously. I.E. you cannot use the 40 bit encryption features AND have it acting as a Q5 tag at the same time. You can switch back and forth using active commands though. However I've not bothered to test it so I could be wrong.

We will use a board from GiS.  I can't find the exact one on their website, but it is similar to this one.

They provide Windows dlls, but we will be using the direct serial interface because we are running Linux.  One thing I like with this one over others I have seen is that the serial communication protocol is a bit more robust with a CRC, although it is a bit harder to simply command it over something like Hyperterminal.

Hi All,

New to RFID, I just purchased a handful of the HitagS 2048bit off Brett @ sleepallday.net.
First Brett has been awesome so very helpful and very prompt.
However I have a problem with my tags and that is I can not read anything past page 00, all the documentation I have read suggest that I need to auth with it first.  They are apparently in Plain mode and the factory password should be 0x4D494B52 but this doesn't appear to work for me.
I am using an idtronic EVO USB reader/writer.

I know this is some what of a thread hijack but I thought it was kinda relevant.

TIA
Slampt

Hey Slampt -

It sounds like you've made more progress working with the EVO USB reader/writer than I have! I'm interested to see any code you might have written, if you don't mind sharing of-course... I just use my HITAG S 2048s in plain mode, and have been trying to learn to use my EVO USB writer to modify the code, and also enable some other HITAG S features.

Shoot me an e-mail if you don't mind -- tim at timfanelli (dot) com

Tks

Hey Tim,

Just sent you an email.  I haven't really gotten very far with it. Until I can actually access the other pages from the Hitag S using the EVO I am stuck. The documentation is a little scarce and the place I bought it from doesn't seem to want to help that much so I guess I will keep plugging away at it, and post my findings here.

Hey there?
I'm curious if you have any more of these HiTag's?
Looking at Trossen Robotics is insane shipping prices to me in Oregon, $5+ for the tag and $15+ for shipping for a device the size of a grain of rice?! If anyone has a tag I can have or buy from you let me know! Thanks

Hi all,

i'm also very interested in buying a couple of HiTag S 2048 glass tags. The only place i can find them, i have to buy 200 tags :-( Can anyone give me a hint on a shop (or private person) who are willing to sell 2-5 tags and send them to Denmark (Europe)?

Thanks,

Jonas
