I want to make the deadbolt open without having the electronic strike with it
but I'm not sure how the circuit would be set up. I tried hooking it up straight from the reader's 5V output to the door but it just locks up the deadbolt and I have to reset it by taking the batteries out and putting them back in (scared me the first time it happened, thought I might have fried the deadbolt!) I have a reed relay switch but I don't have the 5V DPDT relay. Thanks. |

Hmm... well, I'm not sure how you hooked up your deadbolt and your reader... but you don't need the strike. The strike is optional, and when used it is meant to replace the door latch (not the deadbolt) strike. Tell me a little more about your set up... what deadbolt do you have? What reader do you have? How did you wire the reader to the deadbolt? |

After several hours of contemplation and trial and error I figured it out.
I'm using the same deadbolt that is in the book and a phidgets reader. It is hooked up to a small Windows XP computer that does the access control program that is included with the book downloads (thanks for that, I hate programming). The reader is hooked to the computer with the usual USB and then I have some wires going to a relay switch from the output of the reader. I wired a single pole relay switch so that when the relay is triggered it completes the circuit for the open switch on the door and when the relay switches back the deadbolt opens. We also did a little extra thing where our intranet site running SQL Server 2005 and ASP.net reads the MDB file that is installed with the DooRFID software and displays it on the intranet site and we can manage the tags from there. It is very spiffy. I also tried your solution for logging into Windows with RFID and it worked great! I've been doing this for a college project and your book has been very helpful, thank you very much. |
